Thanks to George the wife and I got the idea to go do a drive up to Bellingham Washington. On the way we took one of the most beautiful roads in all of Western Washington, Chuckanut Drive. This road was the first road to connect Bellingham and Whatcom county with the rest of Washington. It winds along the coast through the Chuckanut mountains. It is very narrow and either has rock cliffs on both sides of it, or a cliff and drop off on the other side. This road is very popular with bicycle riders, motor cycle riders and people that have vintage cars or sports cars. On this trip I counted 1 Lamborghini, 2 De tomaso Pantera's, four or five Lotus Exiges, a few Porches, a bunch of Triumphs and other rare cars.
A view of Chuckanut drive as it heads up into the Mountains.
The first turn, the road is still nice and wide here, but notice the rocks on either side of the road
Same corner looking back down the road.
A bridge that spans a small ravine. If I remember right the road makes a sharp turn to get onto this bridge and then the bridge continues the curve taking you nearly 180 degress back around.
Next off on our trip we stopped at Larrabee state park which is located right on Chuckanut drive. This park has many trails to hike on with some fantastic views of the Washington coast. Here are some pictures taken while we did a quick hike around the park.
A view of the beach from right after the trail head
A view of part of the trail that winds along the coast
A view of a rock outcropping located at the end of the trail.
Same area, view looking the opposite way
From Larrabee State park we headed into Bellingham and to Western Washington University. This is the University that the wife and I both graduated from.
A view of Red Square, the fountain and Bond Hall. Bond hall is the home of the Math and Physics department and was built hollow in the middle with the idea being they were going to get a computer to fill that space. Keep in mind it was built in the 60's and computers were huge. I spent a lot of time in this building since I majored in Mathematics
A view of part of Western's art collection. The university has a large outdoor sculpture collection located all over the campus For some reason I have always liked these little guys
A view of the oldest building on campus, Old Main. I believe it was constructed in 1893
Well it was a fun trip that took all day. The wife is already making plans to do it again. Sorry I didn't get any pics of the cars. Most of them passed me going the opposite way. I think one day maybe come spring it would be fun to ride my bicycle instead of driving. This would allow me to get far more pictures.
